Fowler Motel
216 E. Poplar Avenue
Wildwood, NJ 08260

(609) 522-5077

wildwoodwaitress:
I remember visiting the Folwer in the late '60s when my aunt's sister and her family own and ran it. It was a sweet little place with a postage-stamp sized pool. The building, if I recall correctly was a variegated tan brick with dark green trim. The individual rooms were small and neat.

Another little treasure on Popular Ave now gone.

Wingate Motel
305 E. Rio Grande Ave.
Wildwood, NJ 08260

(609) 522-7412

The history of the Wingate property is one of the most dramatic in the island's history, at least in terms of physical transformation. Originally a small one-story motor court owned and operated by the Wingate family, the motel was expanded several times over the years. By the turn of the 21st Century, however, the property was tired and apparently on its last legs. It was rescued by the Morey Organization, which transformed it into the Starlux, the sparkling entity that ushered in the era of "Neo" Doo Wop in the Wildwoods.

Shore Theater
3511 Atlantic Ave.
Wildwood, NJ 08260

Renowned for its classic Art Deco facade and prominent location on bustling Atlantic Ave., the Shore opened as a single-screen theater in the fall of 1939. Three decades later, it became a twin theater; it would eventually become part of the 'Shore 4' complex along with its next door neighbor, the Blaker Theater. For the bulk of its nearly six-decade existence, the Shore was considered the premier movie theater in the Wildwoods.

Red Sky Cafe
3601 Atlantic Avenue
Wildwood, NJ 08260

(609) 522-7747

The structure originally known as the Midtown Lounge has gone through many incarnations, particularly in recent years. It operated most recently as the Red Sky Cafe, but only for two seasons. The building is currently undergoing renovations and will presumably re-open with a new name, theme and menu in 2008. The rumored name for the new business is "Jersey Girl."
