Though it has always resembled more of a traditional bungalow or ranch-style home, the one-story Eileen was the first lodging entity in the Crest to be referred to as a motel. Built in 1952, this seemingly-unremarkable structure served as a forerunner to the many 'Doo Wop' institutions that would soon begin to follow. The Eileen has stood the test of time, and remains in operation to this day.

fuzzyscorpio adds: The "unremarkable" appearance of the Eileen as seen from Pacific Ave here may be a tad misleading, as it literally does look like a single-family home, but stretching out behind it is a larger L-shaped structure that, with the "house," forms a seemingly well protected, cozy court--not quite a motor court, at least not nowadays, but a close cousin to that common 1950s style.

Formally known as Angie and Llyod's Hilltop Diner. This was a classic diner-style design with stainless steel facade and lots of neon.

The Hurricane had a very sleek interior with black, white, shades of blue and chrome color-scheme.

The Hurricane was reportedly destroyed by fire and it's relationship to the present day "Hurricane East" is uncertain.

Built sometime in the 1970's, the Internationale Motel was a uniquely shaped motel on the oceanfront at St. Paul Avenue. It featured a rather unique neon sign (never to be seen again) and is shaped like a lower case "r" facing the ocean. As far as motels go, the Internationale had a relatively short lifespan. It closed and was abandoned sometime in the late 1980's or early 90's.

fuzzyscorpio clarifies: The Internationale wasn't a Reges- or Bal Harbour-era motel; its roots are very early doo-wop. The structure was erected in the mid-1950s as the Atlantis Lodge and was one of the first postwar oceanfront motels in the Crest, if not the first. It was slightly modified when it changed hands and was rechristened the Internationale. My family stayed at this establishment every summer from 1954 or 1955 until the Reges opened around 1972. We recall it becoming the Internationale in the mid-60s, an impression supported by a photograph from the Aladdin Color collection in which the Internationale with its rooftop sign can be seen behind the Carriage Stop motel. This image is identified as a 1960s scene in the online shop where copies of it are sold.

Following its dark period, the Internationale was redeveloped as the Atlantis Condominiums, where the "bones" of the old Atlantis Lodge remain visible in the building's "r" shape.

Built in the mid-1960's, the Ocean Breeze was clad in white stucco with blue trim. The structure featured a carport. The Ocean Breeze Motel has now been converted to condos, losing most of its Doo Wop look but still recognizable from the street.

The New Doo Wop Museum is a partial reincarnation of the inimitable Surfside Restaurant. The museum, crowned with the spared roof that was saved in storage for a number of years, is lit with bright blue neon bulbs. It is "Brimming with cool artifacts, fun memories, fascinating history and bright neon lights" - per the Doo Wop Preservation League website. For the past summer, the "Doo Wop Malt Shop" has been in business in the museum. It is one of three different cafes in the museum that have come and gone over the past three years.

 Before the Atlantis Condominiums was the Internationale Motel, it was the Atlantis Lodge-which, presumably, the name of the present-day condo recalls. It is believed to be unique among motel-condo conversions in the Wildwoods as an ambitious expansion/renovation that still shows, nevertheless, the bones of the original. According to a photo taken of it from the beach, its first phase of redevelopment—with a third floor added, but prior to the extension of the north wing—took place in 1996-7. (It already had a condos-for-sale sign on it at that point.)

The Atlantis Lodge opened in the mid-50s, probably '54, and operated continuously until new owners rechristened it the Internationale in the mid- to late '60s. It was one of the first motels built on the oceanfront in the postwar era, with the Beach Waves Motel in 1956.

The Cameo Condominiums are a small two story building much near the Atlantis Condominiums (Once the Internationale Motel). The building was closed in 2008, and was undergoing a complete indoor and outdoor renovation in Summer 2009.

Heralded today as the Wildwoods' quintessential "Doo Wop" icon, the Caribbean was designed and built by the legendary Lou Morey in 1958.

Built in 1958, the Caribbean is a flat-roofed, two-story, J-shaped motel with no visible means of support for the continuous balconies. The south wing contains 10 bays facing north. The east bay contains one bay with the office on the first floor and a game room on the second floor. The glass walls of the game room angle in to the center and out to the roofline. The roofline of the game room extends north as a wood lattice over the sundeck underneath. The second floor of the east wing is wider than the first, creating a carport supported by slender poles on the first floor. An unsupported, curved concrete ramp connects the first floor to the sundeck on the second. The west wing contains four bays on each floor, facing east. The U-shaped pool is located in the center of the "J" and is protected from the street by low shrubbery and parking. The motel is clad in light yellow stucco with the edges of the balconies slanted in and out, with staggered lights on each side. A neon sign mounted to the roof of the east wing, facing north, provides signage for the motel.

The Doris Vernon sits vacant and boarded up. It was permanently closed in January 2009 after suffering damage due to arson. The Taffy Walk Condo Motel is expected to be built in its place.

Aquarius is a flat-roofed, four story,rectangular motel with continuous balconies. Clad in stucco. The first bay of the first floor is open, as a carport under the rooms above.

At some point, the neon water-bearer was removed from its freestanding sign.
