24th Street Motel
2401 Surf Avenue
North Wildwood, NJ 08260

For decades, the starburst-shaped neon emblem of the 24th Street Motel served as a beacon to travelers and a familiar landmark to locals near the southern end of North Wildwood's Surf Avenue strip. After nearly a half-century of proud operation, the motel closed its doors for the final time in September of 2005. It was promptly demolished in favor of new condominiums.

Atlantis Condominiums
500 E. St. Paul Ave.
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

(609) 522-9238

Before the Atlantis Condominiums was the Internationale Motel, it was the Atlantis Lodge-which, presumably, the name of the present-day condo recalls. It is believed to be unique among motel-condo conversions in the Wildwoods as an ambitious expansion/renovation that still shows, nevertheless, the bones of the original. According to a photo taken of it from the beach, its first phase of redevelopment—with a third floor added, but prior to the extension of the north wing—took place in 1996-7. (It already had a condos-for-sale sign on it at that point.)

The Atlantis Lodge opened in the mid-50s, probably '54, and operated continuously until new owners rechristened it the Internationale in the mid- to late '60s. It was one of the first motels built on the oceanfront in the postwar era, with the Beach Waves Motel in 1956.

Beach Waves Motel
Stanton Rd. & Beach
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

The Beach Waves Motel was the first beach front motel built in the Crest in 1956. It was a rectangular shaped motel with all units facing the beach. Behind it was it's own coffee shop and large parking lot. In the Ash Wednesday Nor' Easter of '62 the Beach Waves suffered heavy damage from the strong winds. Sadly, the Beach Waves Motel was short lived because, sometime in the 1970's it was demolished to make way for the infamous Bal Harbour Hotels.

Biscayne Motel

The Biscayne Motel was built in 1968. Its large playful neon sign lights up southern Wildwood Crest at night. The Biscayne Motel expanded by taking over the Bali-Hi Motel in 2005. The old Bali-Hi building was painted in the Biscayne's colors and its old neon sign taken down. Because of this expansion, the Biscayne now has two pools, and close ocean view rooms. Currently, it has a nice oceanfront view because of the still empty lot which was the Crown Motel (Demolished 2004).

Boathouse Restaurant & Marina Deck

mrchazz: "A Place for the one of the most succluent Seafood Dinners in the Wildwoods, The Boathouse is one of the most appetizing places in the Wildwoods to splurge for a meal during your stay on the "Five Mile Island". Fom Lobster to Steaks, this Restaurant provides a great dining experience.

From the appetizers to the main meal, you are tempted to eat the "Whole Thing" from appetrizer to dessert and ensured a great meal from beginning to end. I highly recommend the Crab Imperial, with it's huge chunks of succulent lump crabmeat to delicious desserts, I can eat and enjoy the whole dining experience.

The Group that owns and Manages "The Boathouse, Uries, and Neil's "Steak & Chowder House" provides the best Seafood possible for the discerning palate in the Wildwoods.

The Boathouse features Early Bird Full Course Dinners from 4 to 5 PM. Other amenities include a waterfront Martini Bar, Game Room, a casual dockside marina deck and a well stocked Raw Bar with everything from oysters to jumbo shrimp."

Buccaneer Motel

A longtime favorite on E. 19th Street in North Wildwood, the Buccaneer closed following the 2004 season. Though a "demolition sale" was held in late October of that year, the structure remains standing today, vacant and neglected. A chain link fence was finally put up around the property prior to the 2006 season. At this stage, the status of "The Buc" remains unclear. UPDATE: On 5/12/2007 Heavy construction equipment and workmen were observed on the derelict Buccaneer property, including a demolition claw/bucket. It appeared that this legendary Motel property will be finally demolished. As of the evening of 9/12/2007, all that remained was a lot in preperation for new construction. R.I.P. Buc. - Mr. Chazz

The Cape Cod, renowned for its classic spinning lighthouse rooftop sign, has long been regarded as one of the premiere motels in the Crest. Located in the Doo Wop Historic District. In a Nor' easter storm in early 2008, the Cape Cod's lighthouse on its spinning sign was damaged and removed. Plans to repair the lighthouse on the sign have been minimal, but the sign continues to spin and light up Wildwood Crest's Ocean Avenue strip.

Caribbean Motel
5600 Ocean Avenue
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

(609) 522-8292

Heralded today as the Wildwoods' quintessential "Doo Wop" icon, the Caribbean was designed and built by the legendary Lou Morey in 1958.

From the Wildwoods Shore Resort Historic District Report:

Built in 1958, the Caribbean is a flat-roofed, two-story, J-shaped motel with no visible means of support for the continuous balconies. The south wing contains 10 bays facing north. The east bay contains one bay with the office on the first floor and a game room on the second floor. The glass walls of the game room angle in to the center and out to the roofline. The roofline of the game room extends north as a wood lattice over the sundeck underneath. The second floor of the east wing is wider than the first, creating a carport supported by slender poles on the first floor. An unsupported, curved concrete ramp connects the first floor to the sundeck on the second. The west wing contains four bays on each floor, facing east. The U-shaped pool is located in the center of the "J" and is protected from the street by low shrubbery and parking. The motel is clad in light yellow stucco with the edges of the balconies slanted in and out, with staggered lights on each side. A neon sign mounted to the roof of the east wing, facing north, provides signage for the motel.

Historic Register: Listed on National Registry 8/24/2005, also listed  Motels of the Wildwoods MPDF S.R. 1/16/2004.

Carideon Motel
2200 Atlantic Avenue
North Wildwood, NJ 08260

(609) 729-7900

Taking all things into account, the Carideon may be the largest, most gaudy "hidden gem" in the Wildwoods. The motel's location certainly accounts for a great deal of its character and charm. It sits back in an area of Atlantic Ave. in southern North Wildwood that is more residential in nature, a stark contrast to the busy Surf Ave. strip, a long block away to the east. A byproduct of its situation, perhaps, the Carideon is in many ways like a motel trapped in a time warp, having changed very little in appearance over the past 40 years or so.

Carousel Motel
5700 Ocean Ave.
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

The colorful, carnival-themed Carousel was a landmark along the Crest's neon-splashed Ocean Avenue strip for decades. It was also a popular playground for many of the celebrities who passed through the Wildwoods during the "Little Vegas" era, including Chubby Checker, Johnny Mathis and even Frank Sinatra. The demolition of the motel after the 2004 season proved to be a devastating blow to the Doo Wop scene. The nearby Hialeah Motel was briefly rechristened the "New Carousel" before meeting a similar fate the following year.

Carriage Stop Motel
400 E. St. Paul Ave.
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

(800) 247-6602 / (609) 522-6400

"Doo Wop" meets the American Colonial era in the Crest at the Carriage Stop, the Wildwoods' preeminent example of what the DWPL classfies as the "Phoney Colonee" design style. Only the nearby Saratoga Inn can rival the Carriage Stop's authenticity, highlighted by the consistent elements of brick detailing, white horizontal wooden fencing and lantern lights around the premises. The motel's large and vibrant rooftop neon sign puts the exclamation point on this clash of ages, a true island original.

Casa Bahama Motel
7301 Atlantic Ave.
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

The Casa Bahama motel was a very unique motel because of its A-frame structure. Its classic neon sign's tubing was removed and a floodlight was mounted to the top. The motel was destroyed in the big condo boom along with the three other motels on the block which included the Kona Kai Motel, The Hi-Lili Motel, and The Dunes Motel.

Casino Theater
Atlantic & Cedar Ave.
Wildwood, NJ 08260

Though it opened roughly 15 years before the 'Doo Wop Era' began, the Casino could rightfully have claimed to be a forerunner of the futuristic architectural styles that would later emerge, wowing patrons with one of the earliest examples of Art Moderne design. This was actually the third version of the Casino, the first two theaters on the premises having burnt down in 1922 and 1939, respectively.

A great example of Doo Wop design, this motel was torn down in 2006. The oceanfront lot still sits empty. Like a lot of motels on the oceanfront, the Cavalier added a third level in its lifetime. Another classic feature of the Cavalier was its tiny oceanfront coffee shop.

Chateau Bleu Resort Motel
911 Surf Avenue
North Wildwood, NJ 08260

(609) 522-2822

Chateau Bleu is a two-story, L-shaped motel with no visible means of support for the continuous balconies, the undersides of which cantilever up. There is an original wooden grille at the overhang, that alternates with four spot lights at every other unit. The east wing contains 8 bays on the first and second floors. The first bay on the first floor of this wing is open and serves as a carport under the room above. The north wing contains 5 bays. The bay closest to Surf Avenue has a porte cochere on the ground floor and a suite on the second level. The bay is supported by columns that taper, with the narrow end at the bottom. The porte cochere is surrounded by ashlar planters that surround the u-shaped driveway. The two bays on the first floor house the office and owner's living quarters. The porte cochere/suite is a most unusual feature of this motel. Built in 1959, the motel is clad in white stucco, with an ashlar (concrete masonry unit)base. The original heart-shaped pool is located inside the "L" and is protected from the street by parking. Scallop shaped stairs are in the end that points to the inside of the "L". Signage for the motel is provided by an interior-lit sign on the south and west sides of the porte cochere/suite supported by wishbone shaped columns. Originally they were metal painted blue, but are covered with stucco and vented. Most of the original curtain wall has been altered. The upper portion is glass divided in three horizontal rows, the bottom panel was originally "cedar jalousies". The lower band now contains air conditioners and a glass jalousie window.

Coastal Broadcasting Plaza
3208 Pacific Avenue
Wildwood, NJ 08260

Coastal Broadcasting decided to build their headquarters on Pacific Avenue and made the wise decision to do it in a Doo Wop style. By doing this, they cleaned up their block in that part of town and used lots of neon. The Coastal Broadcasting Plaza looks great at night when you drive by. Currently they have two radio stations, 98.7 The Coast, and 106.7 Coast Country.
