Monta Cello Motel R.I.P.

8400 Seaview Avenue

Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260

Doo Wop Style:  Phony Colonee

Years Operated:  1955 - 2004

Information
One of the early built motels in Wildwood Crest, the Monta Cello is built in a Phony Colonee style with bricks and a small house used by the owners for living quarters. The Monta Cello Motel was also an early victim of the condo  craze, and was demolished in 2004. Boring cookie cutter condos now stand in tis place, with no charm or individuality.
Facts
In the Phony Colonee style (or Colonial Revival) from 1960 on a great number of roadside buildings, nationally, that make reference to the famous Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson.  This motel, like the "real" Monticello, was constructed of red brick, an unusual choice of material in the Wildwoods.  The office had a picture window divided into small panes of glass, which also suggest an eariler architectural idiom.  - From National Register document
